Interview James Stovall
James Stovall plays the role of a phantom in the new Rocky Horror Show on Broadway. If you have seen the show you know how amazing he is and that the phantoms are the back bone of the show. The following is taken from a internet chat between James and the Play it again staff.
Play it Again: hi, excuse the intrusion, but are you Mr Stovall of the NRHS on B'way?
James: yes i am
Play it Again: Cool. Just like to say the show is amazing:-)
James: i am loving the show
Play it Again: I can see why, its amazing. We came from kansas city over
valentines day to see it. and saw the show 3 times. An i already own 2 copies
of your soundtrack. its amazing
James: watch us on the tony awards june 3, CBS, 9:00 we are going
to time warp radio city!!!!!!!
James: i am having more fun than i ever expected
Play it Again: Awesome. I figured you were going to be on there.
I will tape it for sure.
Do you mind if I ask you a few questions for my friends website?
He runs a site soley Dedicated to the Rocky Horror Show (the
play not the movie) called Play it Again Rocky
James: sure, what is the site?
James: oh play it again rocky
Play it Again: First, What made you decide to audition for the RHS?
James: i always loved the movie for its freedom and the fact that everybody
was seeing it, all kinds of people, some dressing up, some freaking out, some coming out!
a real cult classic in film. i was interested in being a part of that happening on broadway
James: and i was glad that the producer wanted the cast to be racially mixed
Play it Again: Great. How was the audition process? Was it laid back (like any
rocky event should be) or grueling?
James: it was very cool
James: there was A LOT of people
Play it Again: I imagine competition was stiff. I had heard there were a ton
of people interested in being in it.
James: yes, theatre people, rock n roll singers, casts from the various RH
movies, popular drag queens, Sandra Bernhart, it was crazy, but great buzz
Play it Again: Im sure. I heard that Paul Ruebens Auditioned, and was offered
Raul Esparzas part, but declined becuase he wanted to be frank? True?
James: who knows, everybody wants to be frank. i'm am one of the frank understudies
and i love it!!!!!!!!
Play it Again: Have you had a chance to play frank yet?
James: i'm glad that raul got the part
James: he is amazing
Play it Again: Yeah, hes awesome. And really cool outside the show too.
James: not, on many times as eddie/dr. scott and 7 times as narrator
James: my franks will come during the summer
Play it Again: When you play Eddie/Dr. Scott there is the scene with the wax head of
Eddie...when the understudies play that role do they still use Lea's head or do they
have different ones? Just something we were wondering...
James: there is an alternate head taken from a cast of my face and they attached
dreadlocks as I wear as Eddie
Play it Again: Wow, cool. Well we are coming up in August to see Anna Gasteyer.
(we were actually coming up before, but that sealed the deal) So I hope we get to
see you as Frank.
James: you will be very happy that you came
Play it Again: Im sure. We were thrilled last time. It was so overwhelming.
James: thank you
Play it Again: Uhm...lets see. Im having a hard time coming up with anything at the
moment. Im a tad intimidated.
James: well, i need to run, but thank you for the support and you can IM me anytime
James: support means a lot to us
Play it Again: Awesome. I will be sure to do so. Have a great day!
James: have a great day, yourself
Play it Again: peace
